According to Edison Investment Research, everything is pointing to shares in Baobab Resources (LON:BAO), which has just reported positive scoping study results from its flagship project, rising to between 45 and 50 pence.

The Mozambique-focused company said at the end of November that the scoping study assessing the economic viability of its iron, vanadium and titanium project at Tete, returned excellent results.

One of the scenarios, which is preferred by the company, provides “compelling economics”, including a net present value (before tax) of US$1.4 billion; a 34-per cent internal rate of return; US$275 million cash flow after capex and a minimum of 25 year mine life.

Edison analyst Charles Gibson said companies at the scoping study stage of a project typically trade at a discount between 76 percent and 91 percent to the NPV, which would value Baobab at 49.6 pence per share.

Once Baobab has completed the pre-feasibility study, Gibson expects the discount to narrow to 51 percent and then just 40 percent when it proceeds to the development of the project and, once it is in production, shares could trade at a premium to the NPV, added analyst.

Gibson also noted a resource increase reported by Baobab for the Tete project in October. The estimate was raised by 66 percent, or 107 million tonnes (Mt), to 267 Mt grading 29.4 percent iron compared to 26.8 percent previously.

At the global average of in-situ global resources, Gibson estimates that this resource alone would support a valuation of 20 pence per share, which alone eclipses the stock’s yesterday’s closing price of 14 pence.

Gibson said his estimate of the likely size of Baobab’s resource including the drilling that has yet to be incorporated into a revised resource statement would support a share price of 46 pence per share.

Furthermore, assuming his estimate of Baobab’s likely resource base plus additional blue-sky potential, Gibson said the share price could find enough support to top 100 pence.
